This subforum necro is brought to you by: Necrophos, the pope of pestilence

So, if you've been living under an enormous Gibus or have just not cared about TF2 competitive, you might have missed this: TF2 Competitive Beta
Basically, Valve is inviting people to beta test competitive. If you want to beta test, all you have to do is to join the Steam group above and be lucky enough to receive a pass.

Just joining is enough to be eligible to receive a pass, however you are more likely to receive a beta pass if you fulfill the following criteria:
    • You have a TF2 premium account.
    • You have set up the Steam Mobile Authenticator for your account.
    • You have connected a phone number to your account.

I've been looking forward to playing TF2 competitively, not just over tf2center or similar community made projects. A real Valve-made competitive gamemode was something probably alot of players have wished for since TF2 became popular. Also, Valve really doing something for TF2 shows that they still care about the game (or just don't want people to switch over to Overwatch).

    So, my questions are:
    • If competitive gets released or you get a beta pass, which class/es would you mainly play?
    • If competitive would require you to pay money for it, would you do it?
    • If competitive gets released, which changes should be made before it gets released? Nerfs and buffs for which classes?
    • Do you think competitive will be good or bad for the TF2 community? And why?
    • Do you think competitive will work at all?
    • What do you think about the mobile authenticator in connection to competitive? What if you will only be able to play competitive if you have the authenticator set up for your account?

To answer some myself, I'm most certainly going to main Medic or Engineer. Since not everyone will be a pro from the start on I'm hoping that it'll be easier to get into these classes even without previous competitive knowledge than it is in "community made competitive".
Also, since I love playing Medic, I think maybe the Pyro should be... balanced? Airblast is just really obnoxious in some cases, where a single Pyro can just ruin an entire Uber charge by blowing you away.

    Discuss.

    To answer some;

Wouldn't pay money for it if there are already available services such as tf2c.
All classes seem to be balanced imo, nothing that would be completely OP.
I'm just hoping the TF2 community doesn't transform into what already is the CS:GO competitive community. This might also have quite an effect on the community servers.
I guess the authentication's a good step, disables alts from playing and such. Considering that TF2 is f2p, the amount of smurfs would be unmanageable.

Worst part is, I could actually imagine people (including you :^) ) doing this.
Prepare for friendly Sandvich dispenser Heavies.

It'll most definitely have the kids and dumb people aswell, but you'll find those in pretty much every game, competitive or not.
I guess you can only hope for it to not become the kid magnet 2.0.

If you thought CS:GO was bad, wait until you see the hat related elitism, meme slinging and overall autism of tf2 competitive!

The TF2 and CS:GO part of that population is completely extra-ordinary compared to any other game that exists, excluding COD.

Already happens with skins in GO. "Ayy lmao kids got a 0.02$ skin and gets a headshot what a pleb probably toggling."

Yes, which is why I will remain playing tf2center until I have a stack of friends to play with, you'll get these 300 overall hours players insta picking soldier in 6's thinking they know the shit and getting stomped on to blame his team at the end of it. I just see the hell this will bring.

If it had like, an hour based requirement or something which teams you with people around your hours it could potentially be a little more stable, I doubt this will be a thing though.. which will make this shit.

God I hope it works out.

I think there is going to be a profile level system like in Dota and CS:GO.
Which would be an additional hurdle for smurfs and such.

Also I really hope they make 6s a gamemode for more experienced players. On highlander you can atleast make up for a single bad player by having a couple of better players.

well, after some match during the third stress test we can assume those points:
    1) I've never spent so much time watching the main menu.
    2) This is not a beta, maybe an alpha or a pre-alpha.
    3) Custom HUD -> insta-crash
    4) if there are more than 10.000 users online the GameCoordinator need to be restarted every 30 secs.
5)It's not balanced at all, maybe with some time it will be, but atm some match was over in less than a minute.
    6) Who cares of the statements above.. IT WAS HELLA FUN.

Yep, it was down almost all the time.

I spent the las night doingh this:

Go on steam gauges, wait for the green sign on GC, go on main menu click! fuck! (x99)
    clik! Yuppie! (x4)

Anyway, it was a stess test, except they stressed the users. We can only hope they've learned the lesson for the next time.
